This December, the whole family can take part in a fun and educational activity in Garden Route National Park. Come to grips with the art of bird watching at the Wilderness birding event from 18 to 20 December 2019.

For nature lovers holidaying along the Garden Route, this December promises three action-packed days focused on birding and the beauty of nature. From 18 to 20 December 2019, the Wilderness section of Garden Route National Park (GRNP) will play host to a series of fun activities. Led by local experts, talks and guided walks will help you brush up on your birding skills and appreciate the surroundings.

During the three-day event, the entire family can enjoy facts and fun about nature. Think birding talks, kids events and guided walks, as well as special activities focusing on geology and nature photography. Hosted by the SANParks Honorary Rangers: Wilderness, the birding event is organised to raise funds for the park. But while some activities carry a fee, others are free!

Introduction to birding

Not yet an experienced bird watcher? No problem! In the evenings of 18 and 19 December you have the opportunity to get acquainted with the basics of bird identification. During this two-part series, you will receive practical illustrations to help you identify birds in the wild.

If you want to test your newly acquired birding skills, join one of the free guided walks offered during the event. In the company of experienced birders, you’ll get to explore the birding paradise that is Wilderness on foot. The event culminates with a birding competition on the last day – your chance to show what you’ve learnt.

Geology of the GRNP

For those who would like to explore the landscape, there will be an outing to get a closer look at the fascinating geology of the area. During this guided excursion you will discover the geology of the Garden Route National Park in the company of a local expert.

Nature photography

If you want a lasting memory of Garden Route National Park, the photo walk is not to be missed. Bring your camera and get close to nature on a guided walk while you learn how to get the best out of nature photography.

Birding for the littlies

The organisers have even thought of the smallest bird spotters. On 19 and 20 December, there are special bird activities for children aged 6-12. These learning-through-fun events are sure to be a hit.
