Doornhoek Guest House, Mountain Zebra National Park

Book out the camp and you’ll have the run of the place to yourself. Motswedi Campsite, Mokala National Park

This campsite among Kalahari thornveld overlooks a waterhole that draws a variety of birds and big game. A low electric fence is all that separates the six spacious stands from the other inhabitants of the veld. Located well away from the main camp, Motswedi offers the sense that you’re alone in the bush. Each site has private ablutions and cooking area equipped with two hot plates and a fridge. Maximum six people per site.

Mhlangeni Bush Camp, Ithala Game Reserve

This secluded camp in the wilderness section of Ithala is perched on a rocky hill above a wide valley frequented by giraffe and large antelope. Look for game and birdlife from the deck or hang out together in the central lounge. Learn more about the bush and hone your skills on a private game walk with a guide, under-12s not permitted. Maximum 10 guests in five two-bed units.

Whiskey Creek, Keurbooms River Nature Reserve

Get into stable two-seater canoes and paddle the 7km Whiskey Creek canoe trail. It takes you past riverbanks dripping with foliage to a secluded log cabin on the edge of the forest. Gather around the stone braai on the deck and swap memories until late into the night. Maximum 10 guests in a rustic cabin with bunk beds.
