Whiskey Creek, Keurbooms River Nature Reserve
If adventure runs in your genes, you’ll love this idea for a family getaway. The Whiskey Creek canoe trail is an easy 7km paddle past forested banks and peaceful riverside beaches. Your destination is a log cabin on the forest edge accessible only by canoe.
The cabin, which sleeps 10 people on bunk beds, is rustic but has a fully equipped kitchen. The setting is sublime. In the evening you can sit around the stone braai on the deck and swap family tales.

Mhlangeni Bush Camp, Ithala Game Reserve
You’ll love the sense of space at this secluded camp in the wilderness section of Ithala. Set on a rocky hill, the camp overlooks a wide valley where black and white rhino roam. A central lounge is great for catching up with family, while five separate two-bed units mean you can also unwind on your own.
From the deck you can scan for giraffe and large antelope that come to drink in the river below. The services of a field ranger can be booked for private guided walks.

Mofele Centre, Mokala National Park
