Ever dreamt of tracking and collaring one of Africa’s most endangered carnivores, the African wild dog? In June, two Wild Card members and their partners will enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime Kruger experience courtesy of Vodacom Red, the Vodacom Bulls and SANParks.

If you’re a valid Wild Card member, loyal Vodacom Red client and a die-hard Vodacom Bulls fan, you’re in for an incredible adventure. From 20 to 22 June 2018, two Wild Card members and their partners will have the opportunity to join Vodacom Bulls coach John Mitchell and several players for an extraordinary wilderness experience: you will help track, collar and vaccinate wild dogs in the iconic Kruger National Park.

But that’s not all!

The experience includes all flights to and from the Kruger, a two-night stay at the gorgeous Sabie River Sun Resort, and meals and drinks.

Currently listed as an endangered species, the African wild dog or painted wolf is under threat from habitat loss, viral diseases like rabies, and conflict with humans. Because wild dogs roam far and wide, the Kruger National Park is one of the few parks large enough to safeguard them. Encountering these intrepid hunters in the wilderness is an unforgettable event and witnessing how they hunt, a prized sighting. In a recent poll, almost 40% of Wild travellers said the African wild dog is at the top of their tick list when it comes to vulnerable wildlife species.

Did you know? According to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, there are only 6,600 wild dogs left.

Technology for conservation

This unique Kruger conservation effort is going to blow your mind. From 20 to 22 June, you will aid SANParks experts, wildlife veterinarians and the Endangered Wildlife Trust in crucial work. Joining them on the ground as they fit wild dogs with new satellite collars, you will be playing a part in preserving South Africa’s most endangered large carnivore.

Thanks to specialised satellite trackers, collared wild dogs can be monitored on a daily basis. This enables conservationists to react and help animals when injured, sick, trapped in a poacher’s snare, or escaped from a reserve.

Wild dogs are highly endangered and the rarest carnivore in South Africa. They are dynamic and go where they will, so the potential for conflict between carnivores and people is high. How do we protect them? Read more in the winter issue of Wild magazine, due out in June 2018.
