WagendriftNatureReserve

Feel like an archaeologist in an ancient treasure chest. Just south of Estcourt, Makhabeni hill in the reserve has one of the oldest Iron Age sites in the province. The name is derived from the a drift through the Bushman’s River used by transport wagons on route to the Witwatersrand’s gold fields. The Wagendrift dam is a good spot for water sports or lazy days on a boat.

  • Birding
  • The dam, resident yacht club and water activities

We were immediately captivated by the beautiful setting: undulating grassland, wooded kloofs and the imposing ramparts of the Drakensberg to the west.
