Photographer Etienne Oosthuizen was on cloud nine when he managed to spot two male lions in a territorial fight.

The lions had been roaring during the night in a fight that continued for the whole week. Etienne explains that the male lion with the collar had just been released onto the property – a bigger lion that advanced into the territory of the other male.

What is backlighting?

Etienne says: “In layman’s terms it’s taking a photograph into the light, be it natural or artificial light.”

Etienne took the above images on an early morning winter’s drive in the Thanda Private Game Reserve in KwaZulu-Natal.
