Thulamela and Mapungubwe: origin and meaning
The hilltop citadels of Thulamela and Mapungubwe are places where visitors can journey back into the past and imagine the people who once lived there. Just as fascinating as the history of these lost kingdoms is the origin of their names. Leonard Tshikota of the University of Venda sheds light on the names.
Southern Tip Day
Every year Agulhas National Park takes part in celebrating Southern Tip Day, which commemorates the journey by Bartolomeu Dias. Held on 11 May, this fun day kicks off with a relay race and walk.
Fight or Flight
All species will exhibit both a fight and a flight response, however the degree to which they choose one over the other does differ. A lion will be much more willing to fight, where as a steenbok will almost always opt to flight. Yet backed into a corner, unable to escape, even skittish steenbok will turn into a little fighter if need be.
Tourism and our national parks go right back to the inception of the parks. It's thanks to tourists paying for the privilege to visit the parks that there is enough money to run and maintain the integrity of these conservation areas.
SANParks has adopted the 2022 Responsible Tourism Strategy, an important step in ensuring the national parks remain places that delight tourists while at the same time looking after our natural heritage.
