See Cape Town from a new height
Photographs: Kate CollinsIt’s summer in the city and this means that Citysightseeing in Cape Town are once again offering night tours – a chance to experience the Atlantic seaboard along with an evening picnic at Signal Hill. They’ve also introduced sidecar rides that make exploring the city a lot more fun.
The sight of the red and white lighthouse comes into view. This is followed by evening joggers running along the promenade under a stretch of palm trees. The sea crashes against the sidewalk and the smell of kelp infiltrates the air. On the other side high-rise apartments face the sea while early diners in fancy restaurants begin with their first cocktail for the evening.

It’s the first time I’ve seen Cape Town from this view and the open top while windy was a prime spot for seeing all the city’s many attractions. Earphones are inserted and a commentator points out places of interest as well as their history. We pass Bantry Bay and the million dollar houses of Clifton towards Camp Bays where partygoers are enjoying the beginning of summer’s warm spell.
From here we made our way to Signal Hill, one of my favourite spots in the city. Snaking up the hill we had a view of the city, its buildings and houses dotted below us with Table Mountain behind, the harbor in front. At Signal hill, we popped open our champagne and watched as the sun slowly disappeared, darkness taking its place.
After this, we swopped our seats in the bus for a side car adventure that took us from Signal Hill into the city where we watched city lights and Cape Town’s night life come alive. The smells of fish and chips wafted through the streets with the thrum of music filling the air. Apart from the sight seeing bus, this was by far the best way to see the city, confirmed by the curious looks of passing passengers eyeing our nifty car.
The night ended at the V&A Waterfront outside the aquarium where we had begun our adventure. We’d had fantastic fun and I would do it again… the next time on a sultry evening or sunny day! Here’s to the next one.
