New SANParks deposit conditions in 2013

Next year, visitors will have to take note of new deposit rules when booking accommodation in South Africa’s national parks.

South African National Parks (SANParks) has revised its terms and conditions for accommodation bookings, and changes will take effect from 1 January 2013. The new deposit rules state that:
•    A first deposit of 50% is to be paid 30 days after making a booking (up from the current 33%).
•    The second deposit, the remaining 50%, must be paid 60 days before arrival (no longer 30 days prior to arrival).

Bheki Zwane, SANParks sales and marketing general manager, explains that the reason for the new rules is to minimise the problem of bookings not being taken up. “Customers hold bookings for longer periods and only decide at a later stage not to utilise such a booking,” says Zwane, “and this often results in loss of sales and revenue.”

With the present booking system there have been complaints that camps are labelled as ‘fully booked’, but upon arrival there may actually be several units vacant. The new deposit conditions will encourage full payment long before arrival. “No shows without payment”, as Zwane calls it, will hopefully no longer be the case.

The new deposit rules will not affect bookings that are already in the system, unless a new arrival date is requested. Because full payment is required upfront for online bookings, these too will not be affected. The cancellation fee, as it stands, still applies.

An important point to note is that the due date of the deposit will not be able to be extended by reservation consultants. The system is programmed to confirm only reservations that have the deposit paid on time, so bookings that aren’t paid for timeously will automatically be cancelled.

Contact SANParks central reservations for any queries: reservations@sanparks.org

New Rule Reminder: The first deposit will increase to 50% and is payable 30 days after making a booking; the final 50% is payable 60 days before arrival.

H.Schulz says:With the permanent shortage of small coins at the Bank and the percentage calculation of the conservation fees, the banks are pocketing money which could to SANParks I would propose the following: e.g. instead of R 31,68 (1%) of R 3168 Accommodation charge, R1,00 for each R100 and R 0,5 for each full or fraction of R 50. In hte example it would give R 32 to Sanparks not R 31,68

Pieter Nortje says:This is absolutely madness to hold a booking for 30 days before a deposit is required. I am in the accommodation bussiness and would close my door in a month if I have to wait 30 days for a dep, no wonder you have so many " no shows". That is why locals can not find accommodation in the park. Why must online bookings pay in full but there is a different rule for other bookings. We do all our booking online and find that there is no availabilty, now I know why.

Rod Gilmour says:Whate a great idea.We have had many bookings denided, due to camps being full but when we drive past on the same week, there are both bungalos and camp sits available.

Faan Jordaan says:I believe these arrangements are long overdue and hope that they would contribute to accommodation becoming more readily available to locals. As loyal supporters of and regular visitors to the National Parks we fully support the changes!

Ronnie Fox says:I believe that changes in deposit/final payments are long overdue when booking via reservation offices, for the reasons to be mentioned. Coupled with the very valid comments of Sanparks visitors below, I believe that the amount due in total should be paid within the suggested 30 days. Apart from allowing the initial 30 days, the process should be brought into line with the on-line booking arrangements. This may encourage more use of the on-line system of booking, and more importantly, allow more available accommodation opportunities for the many people who regularly search the Sanparks web site to get accommodation whithout success. Visitors will always find the funds to pay for anticipated visits, if required to. If you are making changes, make them meaningful, and to the benefit of all categories of visitor (better availability) and to Sanparks cash flow.

Ronel Adendorff says:These clever people, that have a bank full of money, is very fast to say yes to paying everthing at once. I love going to Kruger since I can remember, I still LOVE to go, but Iam a widow with 3 kids, and can't afford to pay the entire amount all at once, some of us has to plan, so thank you Sanparks that we will still be able to do so.

Lynette Adams says:Well done with the new booking conditions!! We support this whole heartedly as we often go into Kruger, staying in unsuitable accommodation because everything else is fully booked, but once we get there, we discover little of the accommodation is utilised.

Normann Keller says:The booking can only be a improvement. My concern is the number of open stands in camps when you drive for eg.from Tzendze to Letaba. There are always open stands,Why?

Danielle Rutting says:Hooray, finally. Every where else one pays the deposit at the same time as the booking. If one has 30 days there is still a period where the reserved accommodation could stand empty. We had an experience at Letaba and Twee Riviere where by the one we could not come a day earlier and by the other we could not stay a day longer, but camps were about half full. No shows should lose their money! Like the Airlines do. But the new rules are a step in the right directions.

Ben .H. Visser says:The 30 day deposit time is still too long. The max should be say 7 days. People want instantaneous reaction to a booking request nowdays and as most payments are made by credit card or electronic transfer it supports the shorter time period.

John de Lange says:I agree with Pieter Nortje - 30 days is too long and the ssyetm is being abused. Both SANParks and bna fide vuisitors are losing out with this system. I apprecaite some leeway must be allowed, but 30 days is too long. 7 days is plenty.
