An impala in the water
Photographs by Chris Soames Did you know that impala can swim? If you don't believe us, a lucky Wild Card member has the photos to prove this!
Chris Soames witnessed an impala's desperate attempts to escape a hungry leopard…
Chris says:
I was privileged to witness the following sighting last week at Sunset Dam in Kruger. I was taking photographs of a green-backed heron when all of a sudden an impala that was behind me crossed the road at a frantic pace.
The next second I saw a leopard at the edge of the dam to my left and an impala in the water. The impala started swimming to the far bank and the leopard proceeded to follow. Realising the impala was getting away, the leopard broke into a sprint. As soon as the impala found the bank she made a dash for the bushes.
Five minutes later, the leopard strolled back to the dam. It clearly didn't have any success at catching the impala. It seemed confused as to why either the impala did not drown or how it managed to exit the water so fast.
The poor leopard was then mobbed by a troop of baboons. After about 15 minutes of being tormented, the leopard took off in the direction of the Sabie riverbed.
