A close shave with a zebra
Zebra grazing at Albert Falls Dam. Image by Kate CollinsLast year Albert Falls Dam and Game Reserve just outside Pietermaritzburg became an international talking point after a mountain biker was knocked off his bike by a red hartebeest.
The incident was captured on film when Harry, the name given to the hartebeest by Msinsi Resorts staff, comes galloping out the bush, knocking cyclist Evan van der Spuy, off his bike. The video taken on the Time Freight MTB Express Mountain Race in
October last year went viral worldwide receiving over 13 million hits. Since Harry’s overnight fame, he has become a dad four times over and prefers to keep a low profile…
Zebra crossing
Making headlines this week is a zebra from Albert Falls Dam. ‘Mr Zebra’ crossed the path of Wessel Fourie, who was knocked to the ground while cycling in a multi-sport event held at the reserve. Both riders luckily came off lightly from the knocks. Fourie reported to the papers that the experience was ‘priceless’ and thanked God that it was nothing serious. “It was an experience that I will probably never forget. In my imagination I can still see how I literally was rubbing shoulders with Mr Zebra,” says Fourie.
He has since earned himself the nicknames “Racing Stripes” and “Zebra crossing!”
We’re happy to report that neither the zebra nor cyclist was injured.
