Last year Albert Falls Dam and Game Reserve just outside Pietermaritzburg became an international talking point after a mountain biker was knocked off his bike by a red hartebeest.

The incident was captured on film when Harry, the name given to the hartebeest by Msinsi Resorts staff, comes galloping out the bush, knocking cyclist Evan van der Spuy, off his bike. The video taken on the Time Freight MTB Express Mountain Race in October last year went viral worldwide receiving over 13 million hits. Since Harry’s overnight fame, he has become a dad four times over and prefers to keep a low profile…

Zebra crossing

Making headlines this week is a zebra from Albert Falls Dam.  ‘Mr Zebra’ crossed the path of Wessel Fourie, who was knocked to the ground while cycling in a multi-sport event held at the reserve. Both riders luckily came off lightly from the knocks. Fourie reported to the papers that the experience was ‘priceless’ and thanked God that it was nothing serious. “It was an experience that I will probably never forget. In my imagination I can still see how I literally was rubbing shoulders with Mr Zebra,” says Fourie.

He has since earned himself the nicknames “Racing Stripes” and “Zebra crossing!”

We’re happy to report that neither the zebra nor cyclist was injured.

Joyce says:It makes one wonder if we should be holding cycling events in the animals territory? The animals take fright and the cyclists put themselves in danger.

WILD says:Hi Joyce, thanks for your suggestion.I am sure this was just a freak accident... It is wonderful to cycle in the wild through our parks and reserves.

Colleen says:Wessel is a friend of ours - we have not stopped laughing since the incident - of course delighted that he was not injured - but it is going to be a long time before he is not the brunt of all our jokes. Just a pity there was not camera footage, as in the Buck Norris case, but glad that he has earned some racing stripes from this in any event! Thanks for the news!

The Wild Team says:Zebra are herbivores [they eat grass], so they wouldn't want to snack on humans.
