Early Morning by the River

Either oblivious or undeterred by us they continued on their journey towards the river eating constantly along the way.

If you are looking for action in the morning one of the best places to go to is by a river. Hippos returning from a night time of grazing, ducks noisily taking their first morning dip and crocodiles heaving themselves out to bask in the first rays of the morning sun. The sounds and sights around any water body, but especially a river, are unmistakable and shouldn’t be looked over in the quest to find the big five.

Especially as the big five often seem to pop up when you aren’t looking for them. This was the case in July 2011 when we were filming natural history stock footage in the Kruger National Park. We had filmed a sunset next to Shingwedzi River and planned to capture sunrise. On the way to the river we stumbled across three rhinos that clearly had the same idea. Either oblivious or undeterred by us they continued on their journey towards the river eating constantly along the way. It was a stunning sighting, especially with the warm golden sunlight that early morning winter provides us with.

Johanna says:What a fantastic early morning fix in wet and gray Cape Town: a cup of coffee and the sights and sounds of sunrise on the river. Unbeatable.
