Clarens turns 100 - and Golden Gate celebrates
The rolling foothills of Golden Gate National Park. Pictures by Dale MorrisThis year the picturesque town of Clarens will mark its centenary with a weekend-long festival that extends to Golden Gate Highlands National Park.
Situated in the foothills of the Maluti Mountains, Clarens is a charming little town known for its sandstone houses, home-grown arts and tranquil atmosphere. It lies on the road to Golden Gate Highlands National Park and there are strong ties between the park and the town.
From Friday 19 October to Sunday 21 October Clarens will celebrate its centenary with a range of entertainment and activities. There will be an exhibition of arts and crafts, food demonstrations, book readings and live music to name a few. Thrill seekers can try out the adventure park or hot air ballooning.
A highlight will be the traditional wedding ceremony between Mount Horeb near Clarens and Rhibbok Kop in Golden Gate – symbolic of the close partnership between the town and the park. The Bochabela String Quartet will serenade the couple and at a romantic event in the town square, the groom will have to pay lobola!
