The late Dr Tol Pienaar did an excellent job in uncovering the history of the Lowveld area and the much-loved Kruger National Park. In his book A Cameo from the Past, also available in Afrikaans as Neem uit die Verlede, he writes about the prehistory and early history of South Africa’s flagship park. The book covers the park’s history up until 1946, when Colonel James Stevenson-Hamilton retired.

looks at the long and sometimes difficult process that the park faced in its developmental stages. If you’re curious to know more about how the park came to be one of the foremost conservation areas in the world, then you’ll love this very fascinating read that gives you great insight into early Kruger.

About the author: Dr Tol Pienaar was appointed as Park Warden of the Kruger National Park in 1978 and in 1987 as Chief Director of SANParks. He held this post until his retirement on 30 March 1991 after 35 years of service, 32 of which were spent in the Kruger National Park.
