A prize meal

GoshawksInitially they were frightened by the movement of the snake but started attacking it after a few minutes.

On a game drive, in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, André and Annette Ligthelm came across an injured puff adder lying in the road. The scene soon changed with the arrival of two hungry goshawks…

During our visit to the Kgalagadi in May 2012, we came across a puff adder that was injured on the road between Mata Mata and the Sitsas waterhole. Shortly after our arrival, two juvenile pale chanting goshawks arrived on the scene. Initially they were frightened by the movement of the snake but started attacking it after a few minutes. The snake was killed after approximately 10 minutes. One of the birds flew away with the snake and started eating it in a dense patch of grass. This unfortunately eliminated any further photographic opportunities!

Nature Lover says:Great photographs. This opportunity only arose as someone appears to have driven over the adder thereby causing it's injury! If the driver had been more observant and avoided the adder on the road, perhaps the birds could have obtained their meal as nature intended - to hunt for it themselves instead of "dinner is served"!

Kevin says:Speeding cars!!!! Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park has some of the biggest idiots speeding and driving recklessly. Not contractors but visitors in their big 4wd's. I visited in April and counted 20 dead civets and jackals leading into the park. In the park itself, in the first 50km from Twee Revieren I came across 2 dead jackals, 2 snakes, 1 goshawk(how the hell do you hit a goshawk) and steenbok. The bigger and more expensive the 4wd the worse the driver. I was shocked and dismayed at the attitude of some of the visitors. Parking their vehicles in the park entrance to check on bookings while people had to wait for them to move. Never visit this park in April.

Kevin says:Shirley Sneddon I went in a twee drive golf and had no issues other than idiots drivers. The road into the park is now tar, which is why there are so many dead animals. The roads inside are good enough for an Izuzu, but you will need to deflate the tyres.

We witnessed this during a March visit to Kgalagadi. 3 speeding 4x4's with CA registration numbers. Arrogant and careless. Richard next to Kruger. says:What a great siteing and it must be a lifer!!! What camera and lense were you using?? If you think you have Idiot drivers in the Kgalagadi then you really must try the Kruger as a lot of it is tared!!! I witnessed one young girl lean out of the back window of a car to look at a lioness walking parallel to the car only 15 meters away. Of course the lioness mock charged and I am sure that will be the last time she will do that as I am sure I could smell a foul odour eminating from that car. On another occaision a taxi, filled to the hilt and more, pulled up right infront of us where we were leasurely enjoying the antics of a troop of baboons. The dude in the back right leant out with his cell-phone to get a picture when all of a sudden a big male ran and grabbed the phone - I guess he now is making free calls to those at Cape Point giving them tips on how to score a free phone!!!! Well done on the photo set!!!
