Cheetah vs. Leopard

Just outside Mopani, in the Kruger National Park, Lance and Carin Abramson had the fortune of coming across a cheetah and a leopard.

Just outside Mopani, in the Kruger National Park, Lance Abramson and his family had the fortune of coming across a cheetah and a leopard. “The two had a bit of a territorial run in,” says Lance. “Lucky for us, right next to the road!”  Find out who wins  – is it the cheetah or the leopard?

The cheetah chased the leopard up a tree and then waited for him until he decided to come down. Eventually the cheetah moved away but when the leopard came down instead of turning the other way he walked straight into the cheetah.

There was a lot of growling and other cat noises and then the leopard ran away. With the leopard’s escape, the cheetah proceeded to mark the tree and the surrounding area, clearly showing that he’s the boss!

Never mind the lions, this cheetah is king!

© Photographs and text by Lance Abramson. Lance used a Nikon D7000 and the lens was a Sigma, 150-500mm, f 5/6.3

Sakkie says:In a confined space a cheetah is not a match for a leopard. I think what we see here is similar to an eagle that is being mocked by a smaller bird. The eagle can not get to the smaller bird, therefore he tries to escape from the smaller bird's harassment.

Malcolm Bond UK says:Excellent pictures Lance. What a lucky siting. We vist Mopani every year and have seen most animals in the area and on the Capricorn loop but have never seen Cheetah. Saw Side-striped jackal and Honey badgers last trip in November 2011. Will keep a look out for your Cheetah next trip in November 2012. Happy viewing.
