Photo safari: pictures from the wild

Roger and Pat de la Harpe are on photo safari with the winner of our Amarula Capture the Sunset competition. The photographers are up at first light and sometimes shoot well into the evening. In between the game drives and image reviews, Roger found time to tell us about their trip.

Roger has the latest on their sightings and pictures:

"Wow, it's been a really busy few days here at Jaci's Lodges in Madikwe Game Reserve. What a great bunch of people we have on our photo safari and we are getting some really awesome pictures.

"The bush is tinder dry here at the moment and so we are getting most of the sightings close to water. It all starts as you leave the lodge grounds with herds of elephant drinking at the camp waterhole. The Madikwe elephants have really relaxed nicely over the past few years enabling very close up shots.

"Lions too have been very cooperative and we got some lovely images late yesterday afternoon as the light started fading and, as it did, we all pushed up our camera ISO settings to keep the shutter speeds up to prevent camera shake. Some had cameras equipped with an auto ISO facility and this proved very effective in this situation.

"We had hoped to shoot some night skies and last night managed to get some really nice images of dead leadwoods against a gazillion stars. The surprise of the day was the bush dinner Jaci's organised for us at the spot we had selected for the shoot. Quite decadent really: dinner, wine and photography – all bundled into one.

"We did manage to spend some time with the wild dogs this morning and, much to our delight, they brought out their very young puppies to show us. Alas, the den site is in rather thick bush so we battled a little getting clear shots of them but it was an awesome sighting.

"My brand new Nikon D800 is a delight. I've set it up so that it is very easy to switch between FX and DX mode resulting in what almost amounts to a built-in 1.5X converter. Image quality is superb and it is a great handler.

"We have safaris happening at Jaci's Lodges in September, November and January. Have a look here for details."

Dawie Botes says:I would love to get a night shot like this. What is your secret? On ISO 1000 I don't get even half as many stars.
