There are lots of park destinations for family holidays, but some are so great your kids will never want to leave. We reveal our top five holiday spots where youngsters can have fun.

Golden Gate Highlands National Park
Transport your kids to a different world with a visit to the Basotho Cultural Village. As traditionally-dressed staff show you around, get ready to meet the chief or try your hand at grinding maize. Parents can even sip traditionally brewed beer with the local elders. Explore the park on a day hike, saddle up for a ride in the hills or view bearded vulture at the vulture restaurant. If you’re lucky, it might even snow!

Anysberg Nature Reserve
The pony trails at Anysberg Nature Reserve are ideal for children six years and older. Go on outrides through beautiful fynbos countryside or enjoy a two-day riding trail. The overnight trail is also known as the Planet Trek and offers the chance to learn more about the heavenly bodies. By day you can look for planet markers along the trail. At night trained star guides will point out the wonders of the heavens.

Letaba Rest Camp, Kruger National Park

The Letaba Elephant Hall is the perfect place to keep children entertained. During school holidays there are guided tours, story-telling sessions by field rangers, scheduled video screenings, games, orienteering trails and more. Kids can touch the magnificent tusks on display, some mounted in skulls at shoulder height to give a sense of scale. Entrance is free.

Cederberg Wilderness Area, Western Cape

Catch a ride on a donkey cart to the picturesque village of Heuningvlei. Kids will love exploring this toy town with its whitewashed houses and farm animals wandering in the streets. Along the way marvel at the Cederberg’s rocky crags and see what shapes you can recognise in the rock.

Cathedral Peak/Didima

This Drakensberg resort is packed with activities for children. For young adventurers, there’s mountain biking, swimming, ice climbing (during winter), fishing, great hikes and bird watching. There is also the Didima Rock Art Centre that lets little ones discover the rich history of the San hunter-gatherers. The rooms at Didima Camp boast satellite television and cosy fireplaces for comfortable evenings after active days.
