Why hotels in Kruger?

Artist impression of the proposed safari resort

SANParks are planning to build two "hotels" in Kruger: one a conference lodge in Skukuza, the other a safari resort near Malelane Gate. Find out what the reasons for these developments are and what measures are being taken to protect the environment.

The new developments proposed for Kruger are motivated by the need to generate funds for conservation. Only five of the 21 national parks generate a surplus, so 'profits' from flagship parks such as Kruger have to pay for other protected areas.

Download the documents below to read about the strategic decision-making process regarding the Malelane safari resort and find out more about the scope of the development.

The surrounding communities have given their support to the development of safari lodges in the park. Africa Maseko of the Sukumani Nkomazi Forum says: "Communities will benefit in many ways - local sourcing of construction materials, about 230 permanent direct jobs at the operational phase and temporary jobs for construction workers."

mark Schlesinger says:I think this is horrible! It shows the true values of Mabunda and his depth of understanding of wilderness and I think think this is a real case if killing the goose to rip out its golden eggs! The feeling inspired by wilderness is so brilliantly harnessed in the simple little camps. Brilliantly tented camps and little rustic houses is smart and simple GET-BACK-TO NATURE architecture.... I feel very strongly about this and so much so that I feel the public should call for his resignation! If he so wants to rape the Kruger for more profit - He could rather sell Rhino Horn! Whats wrong with the Kruger as it is now ? Its cultivated a "theme" and an image and solid brand - that is world class,- But its getting crowded now! Traffic jams every time you see anything.... Whats next ? Ferris wheels, a casino complex ? Maybe McDonald's road side restaurants and Billboard advertising too! I strongly believe an approach of rather more remote simple rustic accommodations in the park and capitalize different revenue models!~ For example people get bored in Kalagadi (owned by sanparks) - you sit around all day and the wardens are lonely too!! Get them doing trails there - Mountain bike trails, walks e.t.c (meet the people- earn extra too!) Get people into contact with the ground...An enhanced nature experience. Rather DEEPEN PEOPLES EXPERIENCE of the bush than spread out more and more "stuff" on the surface !!
