Playful morning with the kids

Sequence by Johan Mocke

After locating the mother leopard and her two cubs in the Kgalagadi between Twee Rivieren and Rooiputs the previous day, we arrived just in time the next morning to witness this playful and loving encounter between mother and kids. After their banter, they decided to move in the direction of Houmoed not to be seen again during our fourteen-day stay. To us this was a precious and rare moment, a gift of nature and a reminder of our shared habits!

Photographs taken by Johan Mocke in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. His photo sequence was awarded second prize in the Captured Experiences competition. Find out more here.

Durban James says:This is absolutely incredible. What a beautiful and healthy Leopard! And in the arid park of the Kgalagadi. Wow. So, do Leopard of the Kgalagadi have similar habits as those of more dense veld such as Kruger? I have never been to the Kgalagadi but am in the Kruger at least once a year. Kgalagadi is a trip my wife and I long to do soon!! These shots just confirm what a glorious and beautiful place it must be!

Johan (Photographer) says:Thank you for all the wonderfull comments! I did not even know about this comments until receiving the "newsletter" email. Yes, this particular morning was a blessing! I have other beautifull photo's of this event, and of more leopards too but obviously had to choose! I am a fairly beginner, so this 2nd place is really a great honour. It was my first time the KTP - obviously have to go again! Maggie- Ek was self ook in Upington op skool - ons Mockes is verlangs verbind (my pa was die stadsklerk van Upt destyds) - maar het nie regtig met mekaar kontak nie. Regards to all!

Andre Wiese says:Stunning! I've been to the KTP three times already, but still not seen this elusive leopard (she's been seen hundreds of times near TR!). Best we could do was to witness a live cheetah kill just south of Nossob. But maybe, just maybe, that was topped by "die nag van die leeus" at Nossob - 9 lions roaring virtually all night. Walking over them (quite literally!) on the boardwalk to the hide, seeing them right up against the main gate at daybreak... incredible. KTP - here I come again, and again.. :-)

I can't be thankful enough for being able to have that in my life. I wish every one that can love and appreciate nature to have it. It has been the most and the best experience and love in my life. Thank you for these pictures, it makes me so jealous that I couldn't see it BUT it gives me so much hope that there are more people that love nature the way it is . Thanks for the beautiful photo's.
